Week One: Field Sites and Topics around Hoi An

The first week of the field school is spent in Cam Thanh, a farming and fishing commune outside the town of Hoi An.

Mornings are spent doing classroom work in the amazing Cam Thanh Community Centre. In the afternoon we test what we’ve learnt by going out into the fields in teams to pursue research topics similar to those you’ll find below.

  • How does Cam Thanh’s road infrastructure enable and constrain safe, active and green mobilities?

  • What risks and challenges can we identify in this local transport ecology?

  • Are farmers concerned about chemical inputs and water quality?

  • Are they engaged in forms of organic or “clean” agriculture?

  • What is the market for their crops?

  • Does this impact on how they are producing food?

  • What is the gendered division of labour/rewards in farming?
